RamRide, a safe ride program modeled after the CarPool program at Texas A&M recently held it’s 100,000th rider ceremony here in Fort Collins.
The RamRide program provides safe, non-judgmental rides for Colorado State University students with the goal of improving safety within the Fort Collins community. Rides are provided Thursday from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, and Friday and Saturday nights from 10:00 pm to 3:00 am but do not run during school holidays or during the summer.
RamRide provides rides without asking for the age of the rider or the reason that they need a ride and is operated through the Associated Students of Colorado State University (ASCSU), in conjunction with Colorado State University and the support of outside vendors.
RamRide operates entirely from donations, University sponsorship, and grant funding. Volunteers are used for all aspects of the program, including manning the phone room, driving the vehicles, and serving as a navigator for the drivers and each position has different eligibility requirements.
In order to qualify for any of these voluntary positions you must be 18 years of age or older and watch a training video on topics such as defensive driving, alcohol poisoning, and examples of common situations that arise while volunteering.
Below is a list of things you should keep in mind if you plan to utilize this free service:
- RamRide only provides rides to an individual’s home. Drivers will not take passengers to parties, clubs, or bars.
- RamRide will maintain documentation of every call received and ride given.
- Each RamRide vehicle is equipped with a cell phone, trash bags, plastic gloves, flashlights, area map, first aid equipment, and emergency policy information.
- RamRide headquarters maintains a direct line of communication with each vehicle at all times.
- RamRide uses a status board to constantly monitor the location and number of passengers within each RamRide vehicle at all times.
- RamRide members can easily be identified by their distinctive shirts and the presence of the RamRide logo.
- RamRide requires that every passenger sign a waiver of responsibility before being transported by RamRide.
