A Glimpse of Greece – Cafe Athens
| One Comment
During this current hard economic climate, many different industries have been impacted. The Fort Collins restaurant industry is no different. The city has seen waves of restaurants close their doors within the last year. This has forced other restaurateurs to fine tune their products and find their niche, in order to keep their heads above the rising economic tides. The recent construction of the Front Range Village Center (located off of Harmony in southeast Fort Collins) has provided a unique opportunity for businesses to survive.
Take Cafe Athens for example. Located at 2842 Council Tree Avenue (In the Front Range Village near Corbett and Harmony), Cafe Athens is one of Fort Collins’ newest additions for Greek food. The restaurant is pretty standard on the outside, but is a different story on the inside. The interior is very spacious, and the decor is authentic. There are beautiful murals depicting the Greek Isles, along with statues, bringing to mind the pictures from the history books we were taught as kids.
Cafe Athens boasts a menu that gives plenty of delicious options for both meat-lovers and vegetarians alike. For the Gyro fans, the menu offers multitudes of choices, including traditional Greek gyros, chicken gyros, and even Americanized gyros for the more “travel-leery”. Be sure to try the spiced potato wedges as well, which come as a side. Cafe Athens also serves authentic Greek desserts (including baklava!), for those who save enough room. Not only is the food downright delicious, but the prices are very reasonable for the current economic climate.
The next time you find yourself craving some fresh and tender lamb meat, a vegetarian gyro, or any other sort of Greek cuisine for that matter, stop by Cafe Athens in southeastern Fort Collins. You can enjoy some delicious authentic Greek food, and you don’t even need a passport!

The Athens Cafe is not run by anyone with any experience with Greek food. The owners and cooks are from Nebraska. That might normally be okay, if they followed any real Greek recipes, but they don’t; they make up their own.
The worst thing noted at the Athens Cafe is that they substitute pork for their lamb. They use 1 or two pieces of lamb on the Kabobs and fill the rest with pork! I caught the cooks and waitress discussing this “trick” and she said that it saves them $2 per lamb meal ordered. Problem with that? It’s dishonest, and potentially illegal.
